An Indonesian Stay Permit does not mean that the holder is entitled to freely travel abroad. If one does travel overseas without having an exit and re-entry permit, the rights of the Stay Permit are lost and the process must be repeated, including paying for the process. This is why holders are obliged to obtain one of the following travel permits:

  • Single Exit and Re-entry Permit (SERP), the right to leave the country and return with the entitlements of the original Stay Permit
  • Multiple Exit and Re-entry Permit (MERP), the right to leave the country and return on multiple occasions within a certain time frame. The MERP can be valid from 1 up to 12 months (for holders of a limited Stay Permit (Kitas) or up to 2 years of unlimited travel abroad for holders of a permanent stay permit (Kitap)
  • What many expatriates forget if they end their temporary stays is to apply for an Exit Permit Only (EPO). At the end of a stay it is an obligation to inform the Immigration Department, the National Police and the Manpower Ministry that one wants to leave Indonesia and return all the permits obtained. By completing this process, one is allowed to enter Indonesia again without any fuss
